»Message From the Chair

Bruce Benbrook, 2014-2015 LOK Chair I am deeply honored and humbled to be selected to serve as Leadership Oklahoma Chair for 2014-2015. I believe there is no other organization in our state that develops, promotes, and encourages leadership more effectively than LOK.

Our mission is to create, inspire, and support a dynamic network of leaders whose increased awareness and commitment to serve will energize Oklahomans to shape Oklahoma’s future.

As we enter our 28th year, I continue to be amazed and proud when I see our mission carried out and the positive results and impact on our state from our LOK and Youth LOK graduates. It is an incredible honor to be part of Leadership Oklahoma and I encourage each member to take advantage of the numerous programs and activities that are offered to help each of us serve our community and state to the best of our abilities. Every program that LOK and Youth LOK offers is first-class in every respect and provides members opportunities for growth in their personal and professional lives.

I want to thank Joe Moran III and all the others that have preceded me as chair of this tremendous organization. The legacy that the past leaders of LOK have left is truly one of great accomplishment and service. We are fortunate to have an outstanding staff led by Ann Ackerman, devoted to making sure that Leadership Oklahoma is the best it can be.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to chair an organization that has such a positive impact on not only those involved with LOK but also on the great state of Oklahoma.

»Message From the CEO

Ann Ackerman, LOK CEO Going to a Thunder Western Conference Finals game, attending a great concert at BOK center, experiencing the four seasons of Oklahoma in the Panhandle or Green Country, participating in your favorite tailgate event at Stillwater or Norman—these are lots of fun and exciting ways to experience Oklahoma. In its own way, Leadership Oklahoma is also a fun and exciting way to experience Oklahoma, but it has a bigger amazing network of over 1,380 leaders!

It is a great time to be part of LOK. We just completed 27 years of leadership and service and we are preparing to launch our next year. In May, we added 51 members from Class XXVII to our membership rolls and 51 members of YLOK Class XIV completed their travel across the state on June 13.

Now we look forward to meeting the members of the new LOK class on August 17 at the Class XXVIII Reception and Orientation that will be held at the Oklahoma History Center. Can you remember the excitement and anticipation you felt as you began your class journey? Please join us at the Oklahoma History Center to show your support. Details on this are found in the Message from our Adult Program Committee Chair Robin Roberts Krieger as well as a list of the new class members.

The 2014-2015 LOK Annual Report and Directory is getting ready to go to print. To ensure that your photo and contact information are in it, we need your membership dues now. You can pay online with PayPal at our website or by check or credit card sent to the LOK office. Please make sure we have your correct contact information.

The LOK Fall Forum will be at the Devon Energy Center in Oklahoma City on October 7. Read more about this from our Membership Committee Chair, Paula Huck. I am looking forward to seeing you at LOK activities and events this year! Mark your calendars now.

»Class XXVIII Announced

The Leadership Oklahoma Board of Directors is proud to announce our newest class of leaders, Class XXVIII. These 51 individuals represent the broad and diverse interests and areas of this great state. If you would like to learn more about these class members visit their class roster page.

A reception and orientation honoring Class XXVIII will be held on Sunday, August 17, at the Oklahoma History Center, Northeast 23rd and Lincoln (across from the Governor's Mansion) in Oklahoma City. The reception will begin at 2:30 p.m. and the orientation follows at 3:00 p.m. Please RSVP here and join us in welcoming this exceptional class of leaders.

»YLOK Hosts Summit and Reunion

The 2014 YLOK Summit and Reunion will be held this Thursday, July 17, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum. All graduates of the past fourteen YLOK classes are invited to attend.

The topic for the Summit this year is: “Social Media-Things You Know and Things You Have No Idea.” The keynote speaker this year is Kevin DeShazo, Founder of Fieldhouse Media, and who specializes in social media training and social media strategy. Kevin does a lot of work with student athletes and coaches helping them utilize social media platforms in a positive way to enhance their careers. He has spoken on over 40 campuses to over 35,000 student-athletes, coaches and staff, and is a sought after speaker at conventions, having presented at CoSIDA, the NCAA Convention and the Collegiate Athletics Leadership Symposium (twice).

»Message from Membership Chair

Paula Huck, Membership Chair I can’t tell you how excited I am to serve as your Membership Chair this year. We are off to a great 2014-2015 year! I’m here to help provide educational events and engage the membership to keep the networks and connections alive. Exciting things are already happening. I hope you will mark your calendars and come be part of the fun! Important dates include:

August 21, 2014
Teamwork On and Off the Court:  A “Peake” Inside with the Thunder Upper Management, held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. We have a unique opportunity to meet with the Thunder’s upper management team. 

So, don’t be a bench warmer, join other LOK members and their guests to hear the Thunder’s upper management talk about what it takes to support the players, the organization, and the community. You will get a chance to hear one-on-one from each person and ask the questions you’ve always wanted to but never had the opportunity. 

After “speed dating” with the upper management team, a guided tour of the new offices, owners suites, players family area, and other fun stops will close out the day. At 5:00 p.m., members will enjoy appetizers, beer, and wine to conclude the evening. You can register here, but hurry space is limited to the first 80 paid registrations.

October 7, 2014
Fall Forum at the Devon Energy Center, 50th Floor, in Oklahoma City beginning at 1:00 p.m.

With the election cycle in full swing, this year’s forum will be about the election process, examination of the primary election races, the influence of PAC’s, and more!  The planning committee has been hard at work finalizing all the details.  Mark Williams (Class XXV) is the Fall Forum Chair. 

Candidates from the US Senate, 5th Congressional District, and State Superintendent races have been asked to speak during the forum throughout the afternoon. Between candidates, there will be panels discussing campaign finance, and election nuts and bolts. The Governor and Lt. Governor candidates have been asked to attend the reception to informally meet with LOK members.

Tentatively, the forum will be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., then directly move to the reception from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Silent and live auctions and presentation of the Distinguished Leadership Award will begin the evening events. This year, Congressman Tom Cole will be the dinner speaker.

There is a maximum of 300 people that can attend (due to Fire Marshal), so don’t delay in registering once the invitations are mailed out. Sponsorships are available!

Please remember to nominate an LOK member for the Distinguished Leadership Award! The award will be given at the dinner. Rhonda Hooper (Class XXI) received the award last year. Nominations are due no later than July 25, 2014.

For those wishing to spend the night, a special room rate has been arranged with the Colcord Hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. LOK members can contact the Colcord at 405.601.4300 for a group rate of $130 until September 8. Just mention LOK when reserving your overnight stay for the Fall Forum.

The Excellence in Leadership Gala will be at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa. It’s not too early to start thinking of nominations for the awards. There are four awards that are given: Lifetime Achievement, Distinguished Graduate, Business Leader, and Statewide Leader. You can find the descriptions and nomination form here.

Upcoming events in the works include the impact of the film industry in Oklahoma, agri-tourism, an oil rig tour, the aerospace industry in Oklahoma, and possibly the Camp Gruber experience! More details will come in the following weeks.

Please remember to pay your dues! You should have received a graduate update profile and an invoice for the 2014-2015 LOK annual membership campaign. As a reminder, annual dues are $150 (in state), $25 (out of state), or $2,500 for a lifetime membership.

* The Distinguished Leadership Award honoree was also the LOK Excellence in Leadership Distinguished Graduate Honoree. No awards were given in 2004-2007. Starting with 2008, Distinguished Leadership Award honorees were selected based on service to Leadership Oklahoma.

»2014-2015 Membership Campaign

You should have received information in the mail encouraging you to renew your LOK membership for the 2014-2015 year. Annual dues renewals are $150 and out-of-state members pay $25. Lifetime memberships are available for $2,500 (paid in whole or quarterly for 1 or 2 years).

Your membership dues provide the support needed to provide quality educational events for LOK members and ensures the same "once-in-a-lifetime" experience for future adult and youth classes. Click here to pay dues by PayPal or mail a check/credit card information (Visa or MC) to the LOK office at 5500 N. Western, Ste. 142, Oklahoma City, OK 73118. You are also welcome to call the office at 405.848.0001 to renew your membership by phone. Dues payments and contact information should be received by July 18 to be included in the 2014-2015 Annual Report and Membership Directory.

For those who are interested, LOK is continuing the three-payment options to become a lifetime member. Option 1: one-time payment of $2,500. Option 2: four quarterly payments of $625 (beginning July 1, 2014). Option 3: eight quarterly payments of $312.50 (beginning July 1, 2014). Class I has proven it’s never too late to be a lifetime member; three of them paid for lifetime memberships last year.

Also included in the mailing is your current information LOK has on file. Please review the profile sheet to ensure the information is up-to-date. You can make changes on the form and mail it in…OR log into the website and make changes directly into the database. Stay actively involved by joining one or more of the many LOK committees. See those committees here. Feel free to sign up for one while you are looking them over!

NEW to LOK members!
Every year, the adult program provides a rare opportunity to learn about issues affecting Oklahomans. The ability to have open dialogue with experts in the field and meet others who share a similar interest in that area offers a unique learning experience. It has fueled or rekindled passions through the diverse topics covered each month. LOK wants to facilitate connecting its members with similar passions to network with each other and continue to make a difference in our state. On the bottom back page of the profile mailed to you is the list of topics you can check as an interest. The LOK's member community will allow you to communicate with other LOK members who share your interests.

»LOK Lawn Party Recap

The LOK Lawn Party was another successful membership event. There were around 106 people in attendance and had at least one person from every LOK Region!

LOK would like to give a big thank you to Mayor Dewey Bartlett and his wife Victoria for opening up their home, hosting our event, and providing the beer. Also, thank you to Brad Naifeh for donating the wine.  Elliot Nelson’s group did a fantastic job helping us decorate the Bartlett’s home and served fajitas with rice/beans, chips/salsa, and delicious cookies.

»Leaders on the Move

Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City will honor the following LOK members at their Paint This Town Orange event in October. Martha Burger (Class XVIII) selected to receive the From the Heart Award, Jesse Langston (Class XXII) Outstanding Corporate Partner, Clayton (Class III) and Marnie Taylor (Class XXIV) with the Always Orange Award.

Bill Anoatubby (Class III), David Rainbolt (Class I), Meg Salyer (Class VIII), Dewey Bartlett, Jr. (Class II), Cliff Hudson (Class III), and Mary Melon (Class XVI) were named in OKC Friday's 50 Most Powerful Oklahomans.

Jerome Holmes (Class XVIII) was inaugurated at the 104th president of the Rotary Club of Oklahoma City. LOK members elected to the club's board of directors are: Bob Anthony (Class I), Ellen Fleming (Class XXVII), Lance McDaniel (Class XXVII), Gary Marrs (Class XVI) and Shahla Reynolds (Class XVI)

Mike Barnthouse (Class XXVII) is now the Chief Financial Officer at Groendyke Transport, Inc.

Lance Benham (Class V) was presented the Zach D. Taylor Volunteer Award from the Allied Arts.

Martha Burger (Class XVIII) was named vice president of the Oklahoma Board of Health.

Larry A. Evans (Class II) was honored for 40-years of membership in the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Becky Frank (Class XII) was name the 2014 Executive of the Year by the Tulsa Chapter of Executive Women International.

Mike Fuhr (Class XXII) was appointed to the Scenic Rivers Commission.

Molly Helm (Class XXV) has started her own business called Purple Ink.

Steven Hendrickson (Class XIII) is a member of the Board of the Oklahoma Educated Workforce Initiative. 

Jim Hess (Class XXIV) is now a full-time faculty and serves as professor and head of the OSU School of Health Care Administration.

Leslie Hicks (Class XXIV) was married on July 3, she is now Leslie Kutz.

Vince Howie (Class XXV) was appointed to the Oklahoma Strategic Military Planning Commission.

Mike Jackson (Class XXIII) was appointed vice president of strategic partners for The State Chamber of Oklahoma.

Tad Jones (Class XIV) was selected as the director of the Will Rogers Memorial Museums

Laura McConnell-Corbyn (Class XVI) was presented the Bobby G. Knapp Leadership Award by the Oklahoma County Bar Association.

Bill McKamey (Class XIV) was elected chair for the Tulsa Community College Board of Regents.

Mary Melon (Class XVI) was appointed to the Oklahoma Humanities Council.

Monica Neal (Class XVI) has been appointed director of community development for the Chickasaw Nation Department of Communications and Community Development.

Natalie Shirley (Class XXII) has been named to the Oklahoma State Fair Board of Directors.

Ted Streuli (Class XXIV) was presented with the Print Quality Award-Daily Division by the Oklahoma Press Association.
