Bruce Benbrook, LOK ChairWow!!  What a great time to be part of Leadership Oklahoma. There are so many exciting events going on and many tremendous opportunities ahead for all LOK members to continue their leadership growth and increase their knowledge about our great state.

Class XXVIII just recently had their orientation session in Oklahoma City and retreat at St. Crispin's Conference Center in Wewoka. We are extremely fortunate to have another great class of leaders who are getting to know each other and are excited about their first session on Tribal Government and Water in Durant this month.

Many thanks to the OKC Thunder organization and Class XXVIII member Brian Byrnes, Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing, for hosting “Teamwork On and Off the Court:  A “Peake” Inside with the Thunder Upper Management” at Chesapeake Arena. It was a great opportunity for LOK members and guests to gain a greater understanding of how our state’s very popular pro sports team operates.  All of us left with a much greater knowledge of how the Thunder organization works and what a tremendous asset they are to our state.

The annual Fall Forum is set for October 7th from 1:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the Devon Tower in Oklahoma City. The Fall Forum Committee has put together an impressive program that will certainly help you have a better understanding of the 2014 elections in our state.  This event will most definitely sell out, so please register today if you are interested in attending. I can guarantee a fun, productive and informative session.

I want to thank each of you for your past and future support of LOK. As your Chairman, not a day goes by that I do not see the positive impact of the leadership, time, and effort by our members to make Oklahoma the best it can be.

Please join me in taking advantage of all that LOK offers. You will not regret it.

»Message From the CEO

Ann Ackerman, LOK CEO During my summer travel, I had the misfortune of being on a flight from Dallas to OKC where we were delayed for almost an hour because of a disruptive passenger.  Has this ever happened to you? Have you had a small child kick the back of your seat for hours?  Have you had the person in front of you tilt their seat back so far that you had their head on your lap?  How much you enjoy your flight depends a great deal on the people seated around you.

In a similar manner, the enjoyment and success of your leadership journey depends on the quality of the people closest to you. I was reminded of this as I reviewed John Maxwell's book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership this summer.  Law 11, the Law of the Inner Circle, states: “A leader’s potential is determined by those closest to him.” Neither your talent nor your passion can take you to your highest potential. Your ability to perform at your best is conditioned upon having the right people at your side. In truth, no one can achieve greatness alone; leaders only accomplish big things by inviting others to join them in pursuit of a vision.

This is exactly what Leadership Oklahoma's mission is: create, inspire and support a network of leaders. Connectedness. Collaboration. Cooperation. LOK is, in its simplest form, amazing people dedicated to moving Oklahoma forward. Invite those LOK members that share your passion to work with you to make great things happen.

When you received your invoice for your annual membership dues, you were given an opportunity to indicate your areas of interest, such as education, tourism, etc. All LOK members that indicated a like interest were grouped together. If you log into the "members only" portion of the LOK website and then go to "Member Search," you can query a "Group" to find your area of interest. Start a dialogue with those who have a similar passion through a blog or email exchange or other form of communication. This is an opportunity to tackle those big issues that were discussed during your LOK class.

Make a difference.

»2014 Fall Forum


Registration is now open! The 2014 LOK Fall Forum will be held Tuesday, October 7 at the Devon Energy Tower, 50th floor, in Oklahoma City. The event will begin at 1:00 p.m. Click here for additional information, schedule and sponsorship opportunities. Individual tickets are available for $75. NOTE: Seating is limited to 300 attendees for this event.

With the election cycle in full swing, this year’s forum will be about the election process, examination of the primary election races, the influence of PAC’s, and more!  Candidates coming to the forum include James Lankford, Connie Johnson, Steve Russell, Al McAffrey, Joy Hofmeister and John Cox (invited).  The reception candidates attending are Joe Dorman, Cathy Cummings, Mary Fallin (invited) and Todd Lamb (invited).

The forum will be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed by a reception from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Presentation of the Distinguished Leadership Award and comments by Congressman Tom Cole will be highlights of the dinner from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A silent auction will be open all day with a live auction during the evening.

Everyone in attendance will receive a copy of Mike Turpen’s new book, Turpen Time - The Wit and Wisdom of Mike Turpen, who will also be an entertaining auctioneer for the live auction that evening.

NEW THIS YEAR!  The Golden Ticket - The Fall Forum Planning Committee is offering an exciting alternative to participate in the live auction this year. They are having a raffle for one lucky person to have their choice of the Fall Forum live auction items before they are auctioned off that evening. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase on September 22. Each ticket is $100 and there will be a limit of 100 tickets sold. Increase your chances and buy more than one! You do not need to be present to win, just tell us what prize you'd like to receive when you purchase your ticket. Tickets will be sold until the limit of 100 is reached, or 5:30 p.m. on October 7, whichever is first. The winner will be drawn at the beginning of the dinner program at the Forum. A list of live auction items will be available to review on September 22 on the Leadership Oklahoma website. Contact the LOK office after September 22 at 405.848.0001 to purchase your ticket or tickets.

»Class XXVIII Begins Their LOK Journey

LOK Class XXVIII completed Orientation followed by the legendary St. Crispin’s Retreat last month. Both were great events and Class XXVIII members are excited about the upcoming year. The next program is scheduled to be Tribal Government and Water in Durant, which will be interesting as well as fun.

»YLOK Accepting Applications for Class XV

 YLOK is now accepting applications for its fifteenth class (YLOK Class XV)! Each year, approximately 50 exceptional high school juniors from across Oklahoma are selected for Youth Leadership Oklahoma. The class will spend June 7-12, 2015 traveling to selected locations in Oklahoma to learn about and experience our state’s treasures, meet community and state leaders, and develop personal leadership skills. Thanks to the generosity of Leadership Oklahoma supporters, there is no charge for students to participate in the program. To read more about the Youth Leadership Oklahoma program, click here.

Applications can be downloaded from the LOK website. You can also contact Lee Anne Stone. Applications must be RECEIVED in the LOK office no later than 5 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2014.

»ALP Regional Conference Comes to Oklahoma City

The Association of Leadership Programs will be holding their Central Plains Regional Conference at The Skirvin Hilton Hotel in Oklahoma City.  On Sunday evening, November 2, festivities begin with a walking tour of Bricktown in the Downtown Historical District. Following the tour, a welcome reception hosted by Leadership Oklahoma City alumni offers a chance to meet visiting colleagues.

The conference will kick-off Monday morning and features a stellar selection of speakers and sessions for those involved with leadership programs. Speakers include opening keynote - Adam Seaman author of Positive Leadership and lunch keynote David Woods (Class XII) with GiANT Partners, author of The Art of Networking - Beyond the Handshake. Additional speakers and panelists throughout the day include LOK members Rich Cantillon (Class XI), Diana Hartley (Class XXIV), Bob Nelon (Class VI) and Lee Anne Stone (Class XXVII).  Click here for a detailed schedule which includes the topics and descriptions of the sessions being presented.

Leadership Oklahoma members who have paid their 2014-2015 membership dues are able to register for the conference at the member rate.

The event planning committee is being chaired by Marion Paden (Class XXI). Lights, Camera, Action! The "Reel" Scoop on the Oklahoma Film Industry

LOK will be sponsoring a member event to highlight Oklahoma's Film Industry on November 6, 2014, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The event will be held in the Oklahoma State University Student Union, Case Study Room 1 (4th floor) in Stillwater. Attire for the afternoon will be business casual and cost for members and a guest to attend will be $15 per person. The deadline to register is October 30. Yes, you CAN do it all in Oklahoma!  Created in 1979, the Oklahoma Film & Music Office attracts film, television, video, and music industries to Oklahoma for the promotion and growth of these industries within the state.  LOK members will get the “reel” scoop on the economic and community impact of film production, what it takes to produce movies in Oklahoma, and take a look at what’s happening in film education within our local universities.  The afternoon will end viewing a number of short films produced in the state.

Leadership Oklahoma Holiday Party

LOK's Holiday Party will be held on Friday, December 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the home of Phil (Class XXVII) and Rhonda Cook. Invitations will be mailed later this fall for you and a guest to attend. Attire for the event will be festive holiday attire.

Excellence in Leadership Awards Gala

The Excellence in Leadership Gala will be held February 28, 2015, at the lovely Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa. The Gala will be honoring 4 individuals and/or businesses in the areas of Lifetime Achievement, Distinguished Graduate, Business Leader, and Statewide Community. »Leaders on the Move

Susan Neal (Class XV) and Isaac Rocha (Class XXVIII) have been named to a community advisory group of the urban design studio at the University of Oklahoma - Tulsa. The advisory group will assist a student-directed study of historic Route 66.

James Farris (Class XX), Wes Knight (Class XXIII) and Kristin Peck (Class XXVII) were recently added to the board of directors for the Allied Arts.

Bill Anoatubby (Class III) will receive the John F Kennedy Community Service Award from the Knights of Columbus Council 1038.

Jari Askins (Class VI) has been appointed as interim executive director of the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board.

Lance Benham (Class V) was announced as one of the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Finalists by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Oklahoma Chapter.

Julie Daniels (Class XXIV) was honored with the Champion for Youth award at the Boys and Girls Club Southwest Leadership Conference.

Lee Denney (Class VII) has been selected as a Council of State Governments Henry Toll Fellow for the Class of 2014.

Becky J. Frank (Class XII) is the Board Chair at Tulsa Area United Way.

Marcy Lamb (Class XXV) was presented with an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

Megan Simpson (Class XXVII) received the inaugural Northwest Oklahoma Pioneering Woman of Industry Award presented by the Woodward News.

Mike Thralls (Class I) has retired as executive director of the Oklahoma Conservation Commission.

Corrections: In our August issue we had a few errors we'd like to correct. When announcing the ALP Central Plains Regional Conference LOK speakers, we misspelled Diana Hartley's name. (Class XXIV) But don't let that stop you from attending what looks like a great event! In recognizing the LOK graduates in the Spears School of Business 100 for 100, we referenced Carlos E. Johnson as being in Class XXI. He was actually in Class IX, which I'm sure he will tell you was the BEST LOK class ever! Finally (thank was a tough issue!) We inadvertently left Sammye Cravens (Class X) off the Fifty Making a Difference which was announced for The Journal Record's 2014 Woman of the Year awards gala.

»Class Reunion Notices

Class X

Class X will get-together on Saturday, September 27, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The event will be hosted by classmates Wayne Stone and Phyllis Worley and will be held at Wayne's house in Oklahoma City. The evening will include dinner, drinks and ~lively~ conversation. Send RSVP to Wayne Stone, Phyllis Worley or Sammye Cravens. Can't wait to see everyone!

Class XX

Class XX will be getting together on Saturday, September 27. The girls will get together in the afternoon at Noel Tyler's to have a baby shower for Samonia Byford and later that evening, all classmates and their spouses are invited for dinner (location still to be determined). Class XXIII will hold its annual reunion April 16-18, 2015 at Lake Murray. Contact Katie Kimberling to be on the planning committee.

Class XXV

Class XXV will have their reunion the weekend of Friday, October 31, through Sunday, November 2, in Tulsa. Come to any or all of the events during the weekend! There will be activities on Friday evening, all day Saturday and a hangar party with John Esposito on Saturday night.  There will be a Sunday breakfast for those who want more socializing. Details coming in a few weeks. Contact Molly Helm with ideas or questions.

»Member Area of Interest Discussion Groups

NEW to LOK members! A way for the members to connect with each other based on their interests and passions.

The adult program provides a rare opportunity to learn about issues affecting Oklahomans. After graduating, members want to know who else has the same interests and how they can work together to make a difference.  On the LOK website, the member community will allow you to communicate with other LOK members who share your interests.  The topics include agriculture, criminal justice system, economic development, education, energy, health, human services, immigration, military issues, state government, the arts, tourism, tribal government, and water.

This is an easy way to find out who shares your interests, plus you can communicate directly with them. You can also post comments about a topic, request others to help with a project you’re doing on the subject or forward great articles/speakers in that field.  The possibilities are endless!

Watch for postings in the online member interest areas over the next month. Member interest areas are considered groups and can be found under the groups tab in the Member Community website.

It's not too late to join these groups!
