NEWS FROM CLASS 20

YLOK Class 20 virtually met August 2-4. Although the program looked different than it usually does, the class was able to create connections with each other while hearing from state leaders about the need to be engaged and dedicated citizens in our state:

• Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell,
• Congresswoman Kendra Horn (Class 30)
• Secretary of Agriculture Blayne Arthur
• Nathan Gunter, editor, Oklahoma Today Magazine
• Commissioner Carrie Slatton-Hodges, Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
• Dr. Kelli Mosteller (Class 32 & Lifetime Member), Director, Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center
• Kristen Partridge, University of Oklahoma
• Moises Echeverria (Class 32 & Lifetime Member), President & CEO, The Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice
• Lynn Porter, Director of Educational Experience, Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum
• Hassan Ghiassi, Lead Facilitator- Better Conversations, Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum
• Erika Lucas (Class XXIX), CEO, StichCrew
• Rep. Cyndi Munson (Class 31), Oklahoma House of Representatives, District 85
• Sen. George Young (Class XVIII & Lifetime Member), Oklahoma Senate, District 48
• Rep. Daniel Pae, Oklahoma House of Representatives, District 62)
• Lieutenant Wayland Cubit, Oklahoma City Police Department

In addition to the inspiring speakers the students heard from, they also participated in "Better Conversations" with the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, leadership and teambuilding activities, racial bias training, and shared videos they made to highlight their hometown.

To help establish a sense of community - and have some fun - the class spent their evenings together with a virtual escape room and had a YLOK Class 20 talent show. The class joined us early and hung out late to talk with each other about future college plans, share senior year excitement, and bond over common interests.
97% of the participants said that YLOK gave them a sense of hope, pride and responsibility for the future of Oklahoma. 83% said that as a result of YLOK they will act as an advocate for Oklahoma with family and friends. YLOK Class 20 participants also said:

“Even though this isn't what any of us thought that this week was going look like, this helped me in so many ways! I have more knowledge about our amazing state, learned about agriculture, how to communicate with others better, and overall just love my state more. Like others said I was always planning on leaving Oklahoma right when I graduated, but now I have found a passion in myself and this state!" - Harli McKinney, Stratford
"I now am very excited to go to an in-state school for college. I may move away for a few years after college graduation, but I plan to come back and raise a family here. There is no better state to raise a family (in my opinion of course.) This camp was an amazing experience even though it was virtual. My expectations of this experience were blow away. I would definitely recommend this camp, virtual or not!" - Katherine Ryerson, Alva
"Youth Leadership Oklahoma has fundamentally changed the way I view our state. There are so many opportunities here and the state reaches a level of diversity unseen in any of the other states I’ve lived in." – Lexie Evers, Edmond
"I learned the most about the geography and the different towns across Oklahoma. Coming from Oklahoma City, I have only heard of a few of the small communities that my YLOK peers have come from. Now, I not only know where they are and a little about them, but I have a friend there too!" – Setara Khan, Oklahoma City
"YLOK definitely did its job in creating another proud Oklahoma leader. I will recommend YLOK to others and will definitely come back to Oklahoma after college." - David Fuentez, Piedmont
