Are You "Shore"? Oklahoma's Waterway to the World

On June 16th, a group of Leadership Oklahoma alumni, friends and family were treated to a “behind the curtain” view of the Tulsa Port of Catoosa. The tour was led by the Deputy Port Director, David Yarbrough, a member of LOK 29.

The port is a 2500 acre inland international seaport and is situated at the head of the 445 mile long McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River navigation system and was truly impressive. Within the port are 70 business that employ over 4,000 people and they enjoy the economic benefit of lower cost shipping of many products.

We learned of the average 2.5 million tons of cargo that passed thru the port that include grains, fertilizer, steel, and petroleum products. An interesting item was that a common 12-barge tow carries the equivalent of 720 semi-trucks, and moves that cargo with only one boat and a crew of eight.

Oklahoma has a major opportunity for maritime development and the Tulsa Port of Catoosa truly connects Oklahoma to anywhere in the world!
